Tooth Extractions: Relieving Pain, Restoring Comfort

Our goal at Deerpath Orthodontics and Family Dental is to preserve and protect your smile. Sometimes, however, tooth extractions are necessary to ensure the future health and function of your smile. Whether an extraction is necessary because of a tooth fracture, infection, or other needs, our team will ensure your extraction is done in a comfortable and supportive environment.

Why do some patients require extractions?

There are many reasons why Dr. Emgushova may recommend a tooth extraction, including:

  • Severe damage or decay may be so excessive that it can’t be repaired with a filling, root canal, or crown, so extraction is the best option.
  • Advanced gum disease can weaken the bone or tissue supporting the tooth, making the tooth unstable and extraction the best option moving forward.
  • Failed root canal treatment with extensive periapical lesion
  • Vertical root fracture, which can be caused by excessing grinding and stress
  •  Orthodontic treatment sometimes requires extraction to find the necessary space to properly align the teeth.
  • Impacted teeth, if not removed, could cause crowding, pain, or infection, leading to the need for extraction.
  • Extraction can prepare your mouth for further restoration, such as an implant.

Extraction Process

Dr. Emgushova will use 3D CBCT imaging to explain and show the patient the state of the tooth and determine the best treatment plan. You can expect the following during an extraction:

  1. Local anesthesia will be used to ensure the procedure is pain-free. Gentle staging of the anesthetic will ensure your comfort during the procedure.
  2. Depending on the tooth root anatomy, some teeth will be removed by simple extraction protocol. Whereas more curved roots, previously root canal-treated teeth, and broken teeth might require surgical extraction.
  3. After the extraction of the tooth, Dr. Emgushova will preserve the bone socket with a bone graft . This involves packing an allograft bone (bone harvested from the same species) into the empty derided and decorticated tooth socket to preserve jawbone volume. Bone graft is absolutely necessary for any future implant placement as a restoration option, but is highly recommended for any extraction of a tooth for ridge preservation and a more predictable healing after surgery.
  4. After the procedure, we’ll provide you with detailed after-care instructions, including:
  •  Applying ice packs to reduce swelling
  • Elevating your head to promote healing
  • Eating soft foods
  • Avoiding using straws or spitting so the blood clot doesn’t get dislodged
  • Avoiding harmful activities, such as smoking and drinking alcohol.

Once your extraction site has healed, Dr. Emgushova will discuss how to proceed with a restoration to ensure you maintain a proper bite and prevent shifting of your smile.
